If you've been thinking about plantation shutters for a while, you've probably already noticed the price. They're not the cheapest window treatment on the market — and that's a fair reason to pause. But after fitting shutters in homes across Surrey and Hampshire every week, I'd say the question isn't really "are they worth the money?" It's more "are they right for my home and my situation?" Here's an honest answer.

What you're actually getting

Plantation shutters are solid, made-to-measure frames fitted directly to your window. Unlike blinds or curtains, they become part of the room — they don't date, they don't need replacing every few years, and they don't fade, sag or fray. A good set of shutters, properly fitted, will still look exactly right in fifteen years. That changes the value calculation considerably.

The practical benefits are real

Beyond looks, shutters do things other window treatments struggle with:

• Light control is precise — you can tilt the louvres to exactly where you want them, bouncing light up to the ceiling while keeping the lower half private
• They're easy to clean — a quick wipe, no taking anything down
• They add a layer of insulation, which helps in both summer and winter

• Bay windows — notoriously awkward for most window treatments — look genuinely elegant with a fitted shutter

What about property value?

This is harder to quantify, but most estate agents will tell you that shutters are one of the few window treatments that add rather than detract from a sale. Buyers notice them, and unlike curtains or blinds, they're typically left with the property. In the Surrey and Hampshire market, where homes are presented competitively, they're a strong selling point.

When shutters might not be the right choice

Honestly? If you rent, move frequently, or are furnishing a room you're likely to redecorate soon, shutters may not be the most practical investment. They're also not ideal if you love heavy curtains and want a very soft, draped look — though many of our customers combine shutters with curtains beautifully, and that's actually one of my favourite combinations.

Bay windows are the window I get asked about more than any other. And I understand why — they're a beautiful feature in a home, often the first thing you notice when you walk into a room, and they present a real puzzle when it comes to window treatments. Curtains rarely sit right. Blinds can look fussy. A well-fitted shutter, though, can make a bay window look like the centrepiece it deserves to be.

The catch is that bay windows are also the installation where cutting corners shows most clearly. Here's what matters — and what to watch out for.

No two bays are the same

This sounds obvious, but it has real consequences. A three-point bay has three flat sections at angles to each other. A five-point bay has five. A bow bay is a curve. An Edwardian bay might have a very shallow angle; a Victorian one can be almost a right angle at the returns. The frame that fits one won't come close to fitting another — which is why made-to-measure, measured on site, matters so much.

Any company offering you shutters for a bay window without visiting your home first should give you pause. Getting the angles wrong by even a small margin means panels that don't sit flush, gaps where there should be none, and a finish that draws the eye for all the wrong reasons.

The hinge placement question

How the panels meet at the corners of the bay is one of the details that separates a good installation from a great one. The hinges need to allow the panels to open fully — so you can fold them back to let in full light — while closing flush against the frame with no visible gaps. This requires careful measurement of the reveal depth as well as the width, and some experience in how the geometry plays out in practice.

Colour and consistency

A bay window shutter is typically four, six or even eight panels across. For it to read as one unified treatment, the frames and louvres need to be exactly matched in colour and finish across every panel. With a good supplier this is straightforward — all panels are manufactured from the same batch. It's worth confirming this when you get quotes.

What a well-fitted bay shutter looks like

When a bay window shutter is done properly, the panels sit perfectly in the reveal, the louvres align across the whole bay when closed, the hinges are hidden or minimal, and the whole thing looks like it was always meant to be there. That's the standard to hold any installer to.

I fit shutters for a living, so you might expect me to say shutters win every time. But that's not quite true — and I'd rather give you an honest comparison than a sales pitch. The right choice depends on your home, your priorities, and what you're trying to achieve.

Cost

Blinds win here, and it's not close. A good quality roller blind or venetian can be had for a fraction of the cost of a made-to-measure shutter. If budget is your primary concern, blinds are the sensible short-term answer. That said, shutters are a one-time purchase that lasts the life of the house. Most homeowners replace blinds at least once every five to seven years — sometimes more. Over ten or fifteen years, the cost difference narrows considerably.

Light control

This is where shutters shine. The ability to tilt the louvres to any angle — directing light up to the ceiling, half-opening them, or closing completely — gives you a level of precision that most blinds can't match. Roller blinds are essentially on or off. Venetian blinds offer some tilt but are fiddlier to adjust and harder to keep clean. A well-specified shutter gives you every gradation in between with a single easy movement.

Cleaning and maintenance

Blinds — particularly fabric ones — collect dust, can stain, and are difficult to clean thoroughly. Shutters wipe clean with a damp cloth. Appearance and longevity

Blinds date. Fabric colours go out of fashion, mechanisms wear out, and most blinds look noticeably tired after a few years. Shutters, in classic white or off-white, are as timeless as sash windows or a painted wall. They don't fade, they don't sag, and they look as good in year ten as they did on installation day.

Flexibility

Here blinds have an advantage. They're quicker to change if you redecorate, easier to take with you if you move, and available in a huge range of fabrics and colours to match whatever you've got going on in the room. Shutters are fitted to the window — they're a more permanent decision.

The honest verdict

If you're renting, redecorating regularly, or working to a tight budget, blinds make sense. If you're in a home you love, want something that lasts and looks genuinely considered, and value easy maintenance over flexibility — shutters are worth the investment. The name comes from the pavement cafés of France and Belgium, where half-shuttered windows are a familiar sight — enough privacy from the street, but plenty of light and a view of the sky above. In a home setting, café style shutters work on exactly the same principle, and they're one of the most elegant solutions for a very specific problem.

What café style actually means

A café style shutter covers only the lower portion of your window — typically from the sill up to the midpoint or the meeting rail. The upper half of the window is left completely open. You get privacy where you need it (eye level from the street, or from a neighbouring property) while the top of the window lets in unobstructed natural light and keeps the room feeling open.

When they work particularly well

• Ground floor rooms that face a pavement, a road, or a close neighbour — you can sit in the room without feeling overlooked, without losing the light
• Kitchens, where you want privacy at sink height but brightness above
• Period homes — Victorian and Edwardian properties especially, where the proportions of the windows suit the style and café shutters feel entirely in keeping
• Rooms where you want to preserve a view from above — a garden, a skyline, the tops of trees

When to consider full height instead

If your primary goal is light control rather than privacy — blocking morning sun in a bedroom, for instance — café style won't give you what you need. Full height shutters let you tilt the louvres to manage light across the whole window. Similarly, if the view from outside is the issue at multiple levels, or if the room faces another property at first floor height, full height is the more practical answer.

How they look

Done well, café style shutters have a relaxed, considered quality. They don't try to fill the window — they frame the bottom of it, leaving the architecture of the window itself visible above. In a room with high ceilings or tall sash windows, this can look genuinely beautiful. They also pair very naturally with a simple roller blind at the top, giving you full blackout capability when you need it.

Are they right for you?

The best way to tell is to stand in your room and think about where the privacy problem actually is.
